Welcome back movie friends. We are doing a different type of review and spotlighting a new disc release. Today we are looking at the epic new boxset of Lucio Fulci's The Beyond from Grindhouse Releasing. The Beyond is not only my favorite Fulci film but my favorite horror movie of all time so I have been craving this 4K release for quite some time. This is a massive 6 disc set housed in a rigid box with a 100 page book and replica Eibon book packaging. My only complaint about the packaging is the discs are slipbook style instead of on spindles. At $70 this was already expensive but I would have shelled out more for spindles. Now let's take a look at the discs themselves.
Disc 1 is the UHD and features the Uncut version as well as the Composer's Cut version. I was fortunate to see the Composer's Cut on its theatrical run and I appreciate it but prefer the old score. The Uncut version looks crystal clear and sharp, with vivid colors and multiple audio options. This is the definitive presentation of this movie. I was truly impressed with how beautiful this looked on my setup. I didn't watch the Composer's Cut from the disc yet but I suspect it will look just as good. There are 3 commentary tracks as well as 2 different interview features both combined run around 90 mins. The disc is rounded out with at least 3 easter egg hidden features, there may be more but that was all I could find. They include Locations: Then and Now. A nice piece with Frizzi and his band performing the score live and an audio piece that must be heard. Disc 2 is the exact same content on a standard Blu-ray. Eggs included.
Discs 3 and 4 are Blu-rays packed with special features. These include multiple interviews, new and archival, still galleries, trailers and radio spots. I found 2 easter eggs/hidden features on Disc 3. A 16 minute slideshow/tribute to Fulci that was way cool and the original US opening to 7 Doors of Death. I did not find any easter eggs/hidden features on disc 4.
Disc 5 is a dvd with the US cut 7 Doors of Death making its disc debut. This is an edited version with a replacement score and is a great addition to The Beyond collection. It includes the trailer, still gallery and a 40 min feature. I found one easter egg/hidden feature on this disc and it is a short interview. Disc 6 is a cd featuring the Composer's Cut with some bonus tracks.
All in all this is one impressive release from Grindhouse Releasing that was definitely worth the wait. I can't imagine any other company outdoing this release. Fulci fans should jump on this immediately! 5 barks out of 5. The Beyond and this edition are Sunny's Video approved!
